Radical Mother’s Day

May 12th, 2008 by hotsalad in Minutae · No Comments

It’s amazing to me how Steph can one minute be so excited to do something nice for me, really seem part of the family and into the group love dynamic, and the next it’s the same old…

The kids and Todd made breakfast for me, pancakes with bananas and strawberries, num. We had to go to church because Steph was singing, so the morning quickly became chaotic. Of course there was the issue of What Steph Would Wear. She wanted to wear a t-shirt dress. This would normally be okay for church in May, but it was about 50 degrees. I said she needed to wear pants. I specifically said “khaki pants, like you would wear to school - uniform pants” to wear under the dress. She came up with ratty black leggings. She said she had no other pants. I found three pair of khakis in her closet a second later when I did what I should have done first, gone downstairs to find clothes for her. Why didn’t she want to wear them? “They feel weird.” From then on it was sulk and attitude, finishing off with her throwing a cross pendant at Thaddeus in the car.

At least we didn’t have to argue about breakfast though!

She did pull it together after church. The rest of the day was pretty good with Steph, excellent overall. I remember being a teenager and being unable to step outside myself on mother’s day, to see that what my Mom really wanted was peace and to feel valued, not necessarily breakfast or gifts. I know some of it’s normal if you don’t know that this same wardrobe problem has been going on for years. Years. 4 mornings out of seven some kind of wardrobe thing. She just turned 11.

Dear Toddo:

I realize that you are somewhat of an old fashioned man.  That’s part of your charm.  You like to do things the right way, following all appropriate customs.  However, when we sit the kids down to lunch *outside* to have a quick and easy lunch of HOT DOGS THAT YOU HOLD IN YOUR HAND, LIKE ON BUNS it would please the house mum if you’d kindly not serve them on plates. Basically, we’re having a picnic.   Four plates, completely unnecessary.   If you want to serve lunch on plates, try something like mac and cheese, and bring them inside.  Make it worth the dishes in the sink.

I love you still.

Sincerely,

Nita

Bunker

April 24th, 2008 by hotsalad in All about me · 3 Comments

As things start getting rationed and people start panicking about the food crisis and it gets harder and harder to afford daily life I find myself happy to have a bunker like area to escape to,  to own enough fabric to clothe my family for at least a decade,  and to have a garden bed and seeds to last at least two years.  And two freezers and a dehydrator.  Oh.  And enough tin foil to make protective hats for the whole family.

She’ll be coming round the corner when she comes…..

Yep.  If Todd has some free time today I’m going to beg that we bring Skarrbus home.  I know.  We’re not going anywhere for a month at least.  I want to clean and organize and putz around in there.

I’m trying to find some kind of map that I can post here, I don’t really know how to do it.  Trips this year that are already solid are a trip to Arkansas in May, and all.the.way. to Vegas in July/August.  We will be returning to the UP, likely in June.  I’d like to get to the lower MI and OH areas to visit some friends, I’m trying to figure out when!

I’m just glad to have something to post here again!

Spring

April 15th, 2008 by hotsalad in Around the house · Kids · 1 Comment

I think it’s finally here.  Our seeds are started.  The bird feeders and baths are full.  The sedum are creeping up through the dirt.  It’s still unseasonably cold here, and it actually snowed over the weekend, but I think that will be the last snow of the year.  Thaddeus and Mags are so gleeful when we run out to put the mail in the mail box, or feed the birds.  Truthfully so am I.  I’d look a little silly running across the lawn yelling “Weeee!” and giggling, though.

Japanese baby girl clothes - that won’t fit Mags but will fit little Holly.

Ah, but these will!

Having just spent hours organizing my patterns, I’m painfully aware I do not need more.  These books are just so inspiring!  I wish there was a magazine for kids fashions LOL.  Vogue baby!

Teaching Craft

April 15th, 2008 by hotsalad in Uncategorized · No Comments

So often I put off teaching a skill to one of the middles, in my mind the simplist of things can be turned into a monumental task.  I’m trying to simplify a bit, and in doing so, tought Steph how to braid.  Just on string.  Not a beaded, braided necklace, not french braided hair, just three pieces of yarn.  Thaddeus, in one of the little tiniest things with the biggest payoff, was finally given a pair of scissors with a shape on it.  He learned to cut in about five minutes, is now a master of the scissor, and seriously, I did those two things at the same time and it took 15 minutes.

Note to self:  Itty bitty.  Tiny steps.

WAHM Spotlight - The Enchanted Nursery

April 15th, 2008 by hotsalad in Uncategorized · No Comments

Teri is one of the first WAHMs I bought from.  I went to The Enchanted Nursery  and bought a lovey, a little floppy doll for Thaddeus.  Neither of my babies have really been the lovey type, but those two lovies (because I’m compulsive and bought a backup right away) are still so special to me, both for their intent and for the wonderful space dye fabric they were created from.  All I have to do is see that fabric (which I now have my own stash of woohoo) and I can smell my little Thaddeus baby’s head, feel his little breath on my cheek.  It seriously takes me back.

Teri describes herself this way: “I’m a seamstress, mother, wife, sister, friend, and the owner of The Enchanted Nursery. I am obsessed with fabric and acquiring it. I enjoy sewing, and do it every day. I sew cloth diapers, children’s clothing, etc. My stuff can be found on my site, Yinia, and Necessitae. OH, and I also make organic playdough. I enjoy walks at the lake with my husband and children, and our Basset Hound. ” She also maintains a blog, Wearing The Crown.

At Teri’s store you’ll find the Mosaic Moon One Sized Diaper, something a lot of people are excited about!

She also makes clothing, right now you’ll find skirts stocked, even in the elusive size 8!

She has other goodies in her store, from mama pad patterns to play dough.  Stop by and do some shopping with The Enchanted Nursery!

I’m Still Deciding

April 3rd, 2008 by hotsalad in Uncategorized · 1 Comment

Exactly what this journal will do.  The idea started a while back as a way to document the things we want to share with our attachment therapist.  Then Tuesday we went to therapy I started talking and crying and haven’t been the same since.  I’m crying.  I’m so sick of crying.  I’m really tired.   All I can think to myself is that I guess someone has to really fall apart before you can effectively put her back together, so maybe this is it.

Development Of Sorts

April 1st, 2008 by hotsalad in Kids · 2 Comments

What is the point at witch a poopy switches over from coming to you, happily, in Magdalena’s case, walking backwards saying “ewwwwewwww” so that I can check her butt and know it needs to be changed, to waiting, stinking, smooshing, and then going through massive headshaking, lying and distracting to deny the fact that such horrible rancid blech is hanging off of their butt?
